FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why should a CHRISTian or CHRISTian Church get involved in or support Prison Ministry?

Because we are commanded to bring the Gospel to everyone. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost" Matt 28:19 The Greek word for nations is "ethnos" and refers to a race, group, or tribe with the implication that they are unsaved. Criminals in prison are a people group. JESUS brought salvation to the thief on the cross as an example to us. Luke 23:43 "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

POLICY NOTE: In accordance with Vt. DOC policy we do not solicit (ask for) donations from prisoners. Occasionally we do receive donations from prisoners

and these funds are used to help needy prisoners only; not for Ministry salaries or expenses.

What return is there for the investment?

The value of a soul is priceless. Turning one person away from crime saves society $25,000 a year in prison costs. The criminal becomes a taxpayer instead of a tax consumer. The cost of a crime can be incredible in terms of prosecution costs, human life, and property. (average sexual crime cost in VT is $139,000.00 for prosecution, incarceration, offender treatment, and victim related costs).

What are the ministry's needs?

1) More than anything else we need CHRISTians praying for Prison Ministry in VT.

2) We need churches and individuals willing to work on support teams for released prisoners.

3) We also need increased funding to expand our ministry.

4) Provide VT communities with trained support teams for released prisoners.

How effective is this ministry?

Salvation: GOD is using this Ministry to save many souls in prison. We don't keep track of the number of salvation commitments, but at any given time at NWSCF we are ministering directly to about 40 to 50 inmates and also to some of their families.

Discipling: We have many inmates maturing in the CHRISTian faith. Our CHRISTian Education Program has been developed, administered and taught mostly by inmate leaders. We have a Bible Basics course, a Discipling Course, Evangelism, etc.

Transition Support: We have worked with many inmates that have been released and made the transition back into society.  We presently have a list of several more inmates seeking help for future release. We have given financial assistance for emergency housing to several others.

Recognition: The Church at Prison has been recognized by CHRISTian leaders and the Vt Dept of Corrections as a valuable resource to the prison system. Letters of reference and acknowledgement are available upon request. The Church at Prison has also been recognized by the US Dept of Justice. Pastor Pete has taught at two National institute of Corrections Training Seminars. Pastor Pete is also a member of a VT DOC team working with The Center for Sex Offender Management (US Dept of Justice agency) to improve the supervision of released sex offenders nationwide. With this involvement and with our web site The Church at Prison is gaining national and international recognition and is becoming a resource and model for other Ministries and Agencies.
